The position is an appointment to the Department of Addiction Medicine at St Vincents Health. This is a RACP accredited position for advanced training in the Addiction Medicine Training Program. The position has also been counted as a non-core rotation for other advanced training in Internal Medicine but this is subject to approval by the relevant SAC within the RACP.
The role rotates through the Department of Addiction Medicine at St Vincents Health and can involve attachments to Western Hospital and Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre. In addition other clinical attachments can be organised with a wide range of other services.

These positions commence on Monday 8 February 2010. There will be a compulsory Orientation session held on this date for all staff new to the Hospital.

Trainees provide anaesthesia under supervision for our patients and work about 45 hours per week for elective surgery. There are requirements to do about a week of nights every 8 weeks and work a weekend every 8 weeks. There is 5 weeks annual leave and we follow the Medical Remuneration Heads of Agreement 2006.

The Department of Anaesthesia has a staff of 56 with a number of full time and visiting consultant anaesthetists, anaesthetic trainees, biomedical technicians, research and secretarial staff.

We perform about 11,000 anaesthetics per year covering all the surgical specialties except for paediatrics and obstetrics. We have a rotation to St Vincent's Private Hospital where experience in these areas can be obtained.

There are over 500 open heart surgery cases, more than 900 neurosurgical cases, 400 thoracic cases and many other major surgical procedures carried out each year. We have a major commitment to regional anaesthesia with 30% of our cases being carried out under this form of anaesthesia and most of the major blocks are performed.

There is a strong teaching programme with 2 tutorials per week and a weekly continuing education meeting. This programme has resulted in a 95% pass rate by our trainees at the final FANZCA exam at their first attempt.

We have an anaesthetic simulator on site which allows our staff and trainees to be exposed to anaesthetic emergencies to improve their management of these difficult situations.There has always been a strong incentive for clinical research resulting in an average of 7 new projects per year and 5 publications per year.

Anatomical Pathology Registrar

St Vincent’s anatomical pathology laboratory is accredited for training for Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. The Department’s workload of surgical pathology includes specimens from general surgery, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, hepatobiliary, colorectal, urology and also encompasses the pathology from City NE Breast Screen and ocular pathology from the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Specialty medical pathology includes bone tumour and sarcoma pathology, needle core renal biopsies, neuropathology and ophthalmic pathology, liver biopsies, gastrointestinal biopsies and dermatopathology. The Cytopathology Service includes non-gynaecological specimens with fine needle aspiration biopsies of various tissues. St. Vincent’s anatomical pathology laboratory has an active autopsy service including specialty neuro-pathological evaluation.

Selection Criteria

Prospective registrars should demonstrate:

i) Commitment to a future in diagnostic Anatomical pathology with ability to discuss and demonstrate long-term aims and goals in this field.

ii) Willingness and enthusiasm to be involved in all departmental activities including attendance at and responsibility for (for more senior registrars) running clinicopathological meetings in Anatomical Pathology under the supervision of the appropriate consultant and participation in quality assurance activities. Examples of past experience in such activities should be given if applicable.

iii)Initiative and leadership qualities within the department, including interaction, guidance and provision of a role model for less experienced registrars or scientific staff/trainee scientists. Practical examples of this would be helpful.

iv) Willingness to be involved in undergraduate medical teaching of pathology within the hospital;

v) An interest in research in Anatomical Pathology and related disciplines which may include collaboration with clinical colleagues. A list of any publications should be included in the application.

vi) Candidate should indicate reasons for preference of a training position in Anatomical Pathology at St Vincents Hospital.

The Cardiology Department at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne is a busy tertiary referral unit which provides diagnosis, consultation and intervention in all areas of cardiology. The echocardiography laboratory performs transthoracic, stress and transoesophageal echocardiography in hospital inpatients and outpatients using state of the art digital echocardiography equipment and using new techniques such as contrast and 3D echocardiography.

There is an active research program in echocardiography with particular interests in assessment of myocardial function, exercise, heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.

The Cardiothoracic Unit performs over 400 open heart operations and includes six surgeons. There is a busy and innovative thoracic surgical unit which is closely associated with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute. High standards are achieved and cardiac results are monitored via the Statewide Audit programme of the A.S.C.T.S. as well as by in-house audit.

A teaching programme is provided with presentations, journal club, pathology meetings and attendance at clinical meetings. Active research is encouraged and currently proceeding at HMO and medical/science student levels and postgraduate level.

Full and part time emergency and Registrar positions are available in the Emergency Department at St Vincent’s, Melbourne, Australia to commence 8th February 2010.

St. Vincent’s is a 400 bed tertiary referral university teaching hospital located in the central business district of Melbourne. The Emergency Department provides care to approx 42,000 patients per annum and has a 40% admission rate.

The Emergency Department has accreditation with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for 2 years advanced emergency training.

The successful applicants will demonstrate solid clinical skills, and an enthusiasm for learning and participating in a team environment. A flexible balance of work and leisure allows plenty of time to experience the social side of life in Australia.

A Director and twelve other Consultants staff supervise the Emergency Department. Additionally there are currently 26 registrars. One day per week is dedicated to Registrar teaching activities.

Position commences 8 February 2010.

This position is accredited as a required year of advanced training in endocrinology.

St Vincent's Health will be participating in a college-approved, centralised selection process.

The Endocrinology registrar at St Vincent's Health is responsible for:
• Provision of proper care to patients admitted for the investigation of endocrine disorders.
• Liaison with other units on the proper care of patients with diabetes mellitus and other endocrine problems.
• Liaison with diabetes educators, dietitians and other health professionals.
• Supervision of a second year resident on rotation.
• Attendance in outpatient clinics in diabetes, endocrinology, pituitary, metabolic bone and one renal dialysis clinic.
• Supervision of the drop-in centre for diabetic patients (fortnightly).
• Tests of endocrine function on an outpatients basis (fortnightly).
• Reporting of endocrine tests under supervision.

The Department of Endocrinology provides inpatient care and consultative services on clinical problems related to diabetes mellitus, general endocrinology, pituitary disorders, and metabolic bone diseases.

The Department actively participates in the teaching program for medical undergraduates, residents and registrars in advanced training.

These positions are aimed at HMOs who are considering anaesthesia as a career. The positions involve 6 months anaesthesia and 6 months in emergency medicine, 3 months of the anaesthesia term are spent at Maroondah Hospital. Trainees provide anaesthesia under supervision for our patients and work 40 hours per week for elective surgery. There are requirements to do 1 weekend every 3 weeks.

Three months of the anaesthesia term are spent at Maroondah Hospital.

The Department of Anaesthesia has a staff of 56 with a number of full time and visiting consultant anaesthetists, anaesthetic trainees, biomedical technicians, research and secretarial staff.

We perform about 11,000 anaesthetics per year covering all the surgical specialties except for paediatrics and obstetrics. We have a rotation to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital where experience in these areas can be obtained.

There are over 500 open heart surgery cases, more than 900 neurosurgical cases, 400 thoracic cases and many other major surgical procedures carried out each year. We have a major commitment to regional anaesthesia with 30% of our cases being carried out under this form of anaesthesia and most of the major blocks are performed.

There is a strong teaching programme with 2 tutorials per week and a weekly continuing education meeting. This programme has resulted in a 95% pass rate by our trainees at the final FANZCA exam at their first attempt.

We have an anaesthetic simulator on site which allows our staff and trainees to be exposed to anaesthetic emergencies to improve their management of these difficult situations.There has always been a strong incentive for clinical research resulting in an average of 7 new projects per year and 5 publications per year.

Each appointment is as a Senior Tutor in the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology.

Anatomy Tutorships are of 15 weeks duration. They involve teaching gross anatomy to medical (and other health science) students.
Contact time averages about 12 hours per week. There are a number of options regarding the non-medical classes, which enables some flexibility to accommodate other commitments (tutors are free agents the rest of the time).
Either is suitable for current surgical trainees or for those contemplating entering into surgical training.

These positions occur within the two hospital rotations.

Positions from RMH, SVH and AH are offered for each of the two rotations (selected via the Supervisors of Surgical Training at these hospitals). Candidates should apply directly to the hospital.

Rosters

HMO annual rosters are not preformatted but carefully tailored each year to suit the trainees’ needs. Rosters are designed after the selection process has been completed, and all appointees are invited to submit a preferential list both for terms and annual leave. These are then allocated as equitably as possible, taking into consideration career goals and any significant personal events in the year.

HMO2/3 Geriatric Medicine/Rehabilitation

HMO 2/3 Geriatric Medicine / Rehabilitation


The successful applicant will work with both Rehabilitation and Geriatric Medicine, providing -
• day to day clinical management of patients under the supervision of both Geriatric and Rehabilitation Registrars at St Vincent’s
• support to clinicians involved in assessment and management of patients referred for rehabilitation across both campuses.

In addition to inpatient care the applicant will participate in a variety of activities including
• Acute hospital assessments
• Research activities within the Units.
It is anticipated that there will be an opportunity to be involved in newly formed Multidisciplinary clinics within St Vincent’s

Within both Rehabilitation and Geriatric Medicine there is a teaching program arranged as well as a fortnightly clinical meeting and weekly journal club.

This posts commence Monday 8 February 2010.

Geriatric Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine work as an integrated service across St Vincent’s within the Aged care and Allied health Directorate. This service is recognised for innovative service delivery and the development of new models of care. Interests in the Geriatric Medicine department includes; dementia, incontinence, chronic pain and process improvement and quality.
The Rehabilitation Unit specialises in assessment and rehabilitation of patients with neurological impairments, dysvascular amputees and following complex orthopaedic procedures.
